Earth Day 2018 at VA

May 8, 2018

Every year on Earth Day, VA medical centers across the country hold events to educate and engage employees, Veterans, and visitors on environmental responsibility.  Events range widely, from partnering with local organizations to host educational fairs, to opportunities to recycle electronics.  Below are a few examples of the many facilities that hosted Earth Day celebrations:

  • At William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI, staff held a fair with information on efficient lighting, led a recycled art contest, and collected electronics for recycling.
  • At the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, events included a food donation drive for the local food bank, a shoe donation drive for Paralyzed Veterans of America- Texas Chapter, and a fair with information on facility sustainability efforts and community partners.
  • VA Portland Health Care System held garden activities, an office supply reuse event, and a fair with 28 different groups participating.
  • Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA provided sustainability information to visitors of the dining area, as well as a guided walk on the campus to discuss storm water management efforts.

Congratulations to these and other VA medical centers across the country on their successful events and their efforts to enhance service to Veterans through improving indoor environments, using resources more efficiently, and taking other environmentally responsible actions.
