VA Team Wins Federal Energy and Water Management Award

September 13, 2016

Marion VA Campus

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will be recognizing a team of VA employees with a 2016 Federal Energy and Water Management Award for their innovative efforts to reduce energy use.  This is a prestigious and highly competitive federal award program with high standards for project impacts and ingenuity.

The award is for a project that leveraged energy and water savings to finance a major capital improvement, a critical replacement of a central boiler plant, at VA Marion Medical Center in Northern Indiana Health Care System.  Through an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) covering this upgrade and other projects, VA has received system upgrades that will be paid for through savings over the next 10 years.

VA Marion is projected to save $817,000 per year through this project, though actual savings have been exceeding expectations, with natural gas use reduced by 59% and electricity cut by 14%.  This project has improved heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for patients, visitors, and staff.

The winning team:
Jeffrey Means, Energy Manager, VA Ann Arbor and Saginaw VAMC
Andrew Mercker, Energy Engineer, VA Marion and VA Fort Wayne
Phyllis Stange, Portfolio Manager, Office of Asset Enterprise Management
Pamela Komer, Contracting Specialist, Performance Contracting Activity Central
Reginald Williams, Contracting Intern, Performance Contracting Activity Central
