2015 Sustainability Achievement Awards

October 22, 2015

The VA Green Management Program proudly announces the following winners of 2015 Sustainability Achievement Awards and Green Routine Awards:

Pollution Prevention
Minneapolis VA Medical Center, MN

David Bentson, Doug Bergeson, Jason Brainard, Scott Mattson, Tom Pikal, and Thomas Wohlers

The Grounds Crew of the Minneapolis VAMC has implemented a more cost-effective and environmentally-preferable technique for deicing roads, parking areas and sidewalks with a salt brine solution, thereby reducing the total salt used and achieving better quality deicing results.  They have made a positive environmental and public health impact through the reduction in the use of toxic chemicals in snow removal and improved personal safety on slippery winter sidewalks and parking areas.

Energy Efficiency
James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY

Thomas Liu and Michael Ong

Based on the results of survey at the James J. Peters VAMC, all defective steam traps have been replaced.  A monitoring system was installed to alert operations and maintenance staff of any failed traps in real time.  The failure rate of steam traps has been reduced from 57.2% before the project, to 1% after the project was completed.  The estimated annual saving of energy per year is 7,872 MMBtu or $101,870.

Water Efficiency
San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, CA

Michael Gaussa

The 322-acre San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, CA, is the 6th largest user of irrigation water (76 million gallons/year) at the National Cemetery Administration.  The facility completed a comprehensive irrigation system audit in early FY 2014.  New master control valves, weather sensors, a weather station, a weather-based irrigation controller with new software, and pressure control valves were installed.  As a result, there was a marked improvement in the irrigation with an estimated 25% reduction (20 million gallons/year) in water use.

Green Purchasing
Office of Acquisition and Logistics

Barbara Matos

The Procurement Policy Service, within the Office of Acquisition and Logistics, launched Green Purchasing News, a quarterly electronic newsletter, in conjunction with Earth Day 2014.  Green Purchasing News raises awareness across the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) of the need to “Buy Green” — a sustainable practice that contributes to the well-being of Veterans, their families, VA employees, and other stakeholders.

Sustainable Building
West Texas VA Medical Center, TX

Samuel Hagins, Daniel Martin, and Daron E. Moore

The West Texas VAMC constructed a sustainable green Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) that is the first LEED certified facility in VISN 18. The 10,000 square foot clinic replaced a 5,000 square foot clinic located in Odessa TX.  The core and shell are LEED Silver and interior is LEED Gold.  The sustainable design improves baseline energy performance approximately 20 percent and water performance more than 30 percent.

Honorable Mention
Sustainable Building, White River Junction VA Medical Center, VT

Colleen Lowe and Michael Vulpis

The Burlington Lakeside CBOC is a 17,628 square foot space located in the historic Innovation Center of Vermont.  This project took an old, inefficient space formerly occupied by a defense contractor and converted it into a highly efficient LEED-CI Silver outpatient healthcare clinic.
